UX/UI Case Studies

I am a freelance UX/UI designer working with product teams on the screens people actually get stuck on. Onboarding that stalls, checkouts that leak, dashboards nobody can read, design systems four teams have quietly stopped using. I spend the first week finding out where the work really breaks, then design against that rather than against a brief. Twelve years in, six of them freelance, most of it in financial services, healthcare and logistics.

UX/UI Case Studies

Three further studies where the deciding work happened before any interface was drawn: eleven interviews, four reception desks, and eleven months against a procurement deadline.

Where the print training still shows

Graphic Design Projects

Identity, editorial and packaging work. Print gives you no interaction to hide behind, which is why I still take it on and why my screen typography is better for it.

Other Projects

Smaller pieces, ongoing practice and the work I do for no fee. They explain how I keep sharp between engagements better than a skills list would.

  • Type Trials

    Ongoing personal study2022 — now

A weekly typesetting exercise, 96 entries so far. One paragraph, one typeface, one constraint. It is where most of my typographic judgement actually comes from.

  • Loring Market Wayfinding

    Pro bono pilot2024

A six-stall signage pilot for a neighbourhood market, built from painted board and a stencil kit the traders could reuse themselves the following season.

  • Interface Almanac

    Newsletter2023 — now

A fortnightly note to around 2,100 designers, pulling apart one real interface decision at a time. Usually somebody good doing something interesting, occasionally me being wrong in public.

  • Portfolio Clinic

    Mentoring2021 — now

Free half-hour portfolio reviews, four slots a month, for designers moving into their first product role. Twenty-nine of them have since been hired, which is the only metric that matters to me here.

  • Design Ops Handbook

    Internal publication2023

A working handbook written for a client design team of nine, covering critique format, file hygiene, handoff expectations and what actually needs a meeting.

What hiring managers get

I have reviewed around four hundred portfolios from the other side of the table. This site is built the way I wish those had been.

  • Case studies with the decisions left in

Each project below states the constraint, the direction that was abandoned and why, and what I would do differently. The tidy version of a project is rarely the useful one.

  • Numbers I can stand behind

Every outcome names its measurement window and its baseline. Where a result was modest, it says so. Where I cannot share a figure under a client agreement, it says that instead of implying one.

  • Evidence of range, not just breadth

Product UX, design systems, accessibility remediation, identity and print. Twelve years of it, with the print training that shaped how I handle hierarchy and typography on screen.

  • A clear read on how I work with a team

Engagement shape, what I need from you, what you get at handover, and how I handle scope change. All of it written down before the first call, so the call can be about the work.

Tell me what the number is and where it drops. I will tell you honestly whether it is a design problem, and whether I am the right person for it.
